কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নৃবিজ্ঞানী ডক্টর প্রবোধকুমার ভৌমিক প্রণীত বিভিন্ন ইংরেজি গ্রন্থের তালিকায় তার “অকালটিজম ইন ফ্রিনজ বেংগল" গ্রন্থটিই বোধহয় আকারে সবথেকে ছোট। কিন্তু গুপ্তবিদ্যা-বিষয়ক তথ্যের পরিবেশনার দিক থেকে চিন্তা করে এটিকে স্বচ্ছন্দে মস্ত বড় গ্রন্থ বলা যায়। আর ঠিক এই কারণেই বোধকরি, বহু নৃবিজ্ঞানী, সমাজবিজ্ঞানী ও লোকাচার বিদ্যায় পণ্ডিত ব্যক্তিদের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করতে সমর্থ হয়েছে এই ছোট্ট গ্রন্থটি। বলতে দ্বিধা নেই যে, আমাদের এখানে অকালটিজম-এর ওপর লেখা ইংরেজি গ্রন্থ হিসেবে এটিই প্রথম, আজ থেকে পনেরো বছর আগে প্রকাশিত হয়। অকালটিজম সংক্রান্ত যে-কোন বিষয়ের গবেষণার ক্ষেত্রে গ্রন্থখানি যে খুবই প্রয়োজনীয়, তা বলা বাহুল্য।
এখন, গুপ্তবিদ্যা নামে নির্দিষ্ট কোন বিষয়ের উল্লেখ করা যায় না। কারণ, এমন অনেক বিষয় আছে যেমন, ডাকিনী বিদ্যা (Witchcraft), মায়াবিদ্যা (sorcery), শাকুনবিদ্যা (augury), সম্মোহনবিদ্যা(hypnotism) ইত্যাদি সবই গুপ্তবিদ্যার অন্তর্ভুক্ত। এই সব বিদ্যার অধিকাংশ ক্রিয়াকর্ম আচার অনুষ্ঠান কঠিন গোপনীয়তার মধ্যেই অনুষ্ঠিত হয়ে থাকে। তবে গুপ্তবিদ্যার যাবতীয় চর্চা বা অনুশীলন (occult practices) যে প্রত্যন্ত বাংলার মাটিতেই কেবল সীমাবদ্ধ একথা কেউ যেন ভুলেও না মনে করেন। এ বিদ্যাচর্চার ইতিহাস অতি প্রাচীন। চলে আসছে হাজার হাজার বছর ধরে ভারতবর্ষের নানা জাতি উপজাতির সমাজ জীবনের সঙ্গে ওতপ্রোত ভাবে জড়িত হয়ে। এই গ্রন্থের বিষয়বস্তুর সংক্ষিপ্ত আলোচনায় এটা পরিষ্কার যে, গুপ্তবিদ্যার চর্চা কোন আকস্মিক বা বিচ্ছিন্ন ঘটনা নয়, নিছক অন্ধবিশ্বাস নয়, আবার পুরোপুরি দুষ্ট বা কুবিদ্যাও নয়; বরং গুপ্তবিদ্যা বা রহস্যবিদ্যার বিভিন্ন আচার বিচার উৎসব অনুষ্ঠান, মস্তুতন্ত্র, দেবদেবী, পূজা-পার্বণ বিধিবিধান ইত্যাদি ভারতীয় সমাজ সংস্কৃতিরই (Socio-cultural) কতকগুলি একান্ত প্রয়োজনীয় ও প্রচলিত দিক। এ প্রসঙ্গে সব থেকে লক্ষণীয় বিষয় হলো এই যে, গুপ্তবিদ্যা বিষয়ক যাবতীয় প্রচলিত বিশ্বাস লোকমানসে (Flok-mind) এমনভাবেই প্রোথিত হয়ে এসেছে নানান সংস্কারের মধ্য দিয়ে, যা অপসারণ করা কোন ভাবেই কখন সম্ভব হয়নি। তাই এই অকালট-চৰ্চা ভারতের আদিম মানবগোষ্ঠীর জীবনে বংশ পরম্পরায় চলে এসেছে অটল অনড় এক ঐতিহ্য (a persisting tradition) হিসেবে।
প্রাচীনতার ভিত্তি থেকে উদ্ভূত ও ধর্মবিশ্বাস থেকে গড়ে ওঠা বহু বিচিত্র মানসিক ধ্যানধারণাকে সম্বল করেই ভারতের বিভিন্ন গোষ্ঠীর মানুষ তাদের এই ঐতিহ্যকে যে সমানে বহন করে এসেছে বা আসছে, তা কোন মানববিজ্ঞানী বা সমাজবিজ্ঞানী অস্বীকার করতে পারেন না।
প্রাচীন এই উপমহাদেশের সমাজজীবনের বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রে গুপ্তবিদ্যা সম্পর্কীয় বহুল প্রচলিত ক্রিয়াকর্মের সত্যতা যে অস্বীকার করা যায় না তা আমাদের বৈদিক যুগ ও তার পরবর্তীকালের পবিত্র ধর্মগ্রন্থগুলির মধ্যে প্রবেশ করতে পারলেই স্পষ্ট হয়ে ওঠে। এ বিষয়ে গ্রন্থকার তার ইংরেজী গ্রন্থের এক জায়গায় বলেছেন যে,...
"these practices have a reality at the folk level and it may be traced in the sacred text as well."
কিন্তু দুঃখের বিষয়, কিছু কিছু ভারতীয় বুদ্ধিজীবী (Indian intellectuals) পাশ্চাত্য মূল্যবোধ ও আদর্শের প্রভাবে প্রভাবিত হয়ে প্রতিষ্ঠানগত গুপ্তবিদ্যাচর্চার যে কোন রকম গুরুত্ব বা প্রয়োজনীয়তা থাকতে পারে, তা তারা চিন্তা করতেও প্রস্তুত নন। তবে তাদের কেউ কেউ অকাল্ট বিদ্যার গভীরে যদি একটু দৃষ্টি সঞ্চালন করার প্রয়াসী হন, তাহলে গুপ্তবিদ্যাচর্চার গুরুত্ব কিছুটা হয়ত উপলব্ধি করতে সক্ষম হবেন। গ্রন্থকার তাই বলেছেন যে,
"...a close scrutiny of the operations of the institution of allegedly occult practices reflects how different regional, religious and caste-groups interact and coalesce through these occult practices."
এরপর আমার আর কিছু বলার না থাকলেও একটা কথা না বলেই পারছি না সেটা হল এই যে, সাধারণ পাঠক-পাঠিকার কাছে এই গ্রন্থটি যাতে সুখপাঠ্য হয়ে উঠতে পারে, সেজন্য আমি আমার সাধ্যমত সহজ সরল বাংলায় দুরূহ ইংরেজি গ্রন্থটির ভাষান্তরের কাজ করেছি। অবশ্য, বিভিন্ন ইংরেজিতে পরিবেশিত মন্ত্রগুলির সরল বঙ্গানুবাদ করতে গিয়ে যথেষ্ট বেগ পেতে হয়েছে। বিচিত্র ভাষা ভাব ও অর্থের সমম্বয়েই যখন এক একটি মন্ত্রের ত্রিবেণী সঙ্গম তখন ঐ সঙ্গমের পবিত্রতা যথাযথভাবে বজায় রাখতে চেষ্টার ত্রুটি রাখিনি। কিন্তু সত্ত্বেও ত্রুটি-বিচ্যুতি ঘটে গিয়ে থাকা কিছু বিচিত্র নয়। সহৃদয় পাঠক মাত্রেই এরকম দোষত্রুটি সহানুভূতির সঙ্গে বিবেচনা করবেন বলেই আশা রাখি।
গ্রন্থটির বঙ্গানুবাদ করার ইচ্ছে প্রকাশ করা মাত্র গ্রন্থকার নিঃসংকোচ চিত্তে যেভাবে অনুমতি দেন তাতে তার কাছে আমি একান্তই কৃতজ্ঞ। গ্রন্থাকারের ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধু শ্রদ্ধেয় অধ্যাপক চিত্তরঞ্জন মাইতি একাজে আমাকে যথেষ্টই সাহায্য করেছেন, সে জন্যে তার প্রতিও আমার অশেষ কৃতজ্ঞতা। বঙ্গানুবাদের কাজ আরম্ভ করার প্রথম থেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত আমার ভ্রাতৃবধূ সুলেখিকা শ্রীমতী সোমা ভট্টাচার্য যে কি পরিমাণ সাহায্য করেছে তা আর বলার নয়। সুতরাং তার প্রতি আমার কৃতজ্ঞতা নয়, রইল অন্তরের আশীর্বাদ। এরই সংগে গ্রন্থকারের লেখা 'ধর্ম বিশ্বাসের পটভূমিকায় আচার অনুষ্ঠান' প্রবন্ধটি বক্তব্য পত্রিকা থেকে পুনর্মুদ্রিত করা হল।- দেবব্রত ভট্টাচার্য

Now, no specific subject can be referred to as Guptavidya. Because there are many things like witchcraft, sorcery, augury, hypnotism, etc. all belong to Gupta. Most of the rituals of these vidyas are held in strict secrecy. However, no one should forget that all occult practices are limited to the land of remote Bengal. The history of this study is very old. For thousands of years, various tribes of India have been intimately involved with the social life. From a brief discussion of the contents of this book it is clear that the practice of occultism is not an accidental or isolated phenomenon, not mere superstition, nor entirely evil or evil; On the contrary, various rituals of Guptavidya or mysticism, festivals, rituals, rituals, gods and goddesses, rules of worship and rituals etc. are some very necessary and common aspects of Indian socio-cultural. The most remarkable thing in this connection is that all the conventional beliefs about Gupta have become so rooted in the Lokmans (Flok-mind) through various reforms that it has never been possible to remove them. Therefore, this ancient discussion has been passed down from generation to generation in the life of primitive human groups of India as a persisting tradition.
No anthropologist or sociologist can deny the fact that the people of different groups of India have carried or are carrying this tradition along with many different mental ideas that originated from the foundations of antiquity and developed from religious beliefs.
The undeniable fact of the widespread practice of occultism in various spheres of social life of this ancient subcontinent becomes clear only when we delve into the sacred scriptures of the Vedic period and beyond. In this regard, the writer said in one place of his English book that,...
"These practices have a reality at the folk level and it may be traced in the sacred text as well."
But unfortunately, some Indian intellectuals are influenced by Western values and ideals and are not ready to think about the importance or necessity of institutional occult practices. But if some of them try to have a little insight into occult lore, they will be able to appreciate the importance of occult practice. The author thus states that,
"...a close scrutiny of the operations of the institution of allegedly occult practices reflects how different regional, religious and caste-groups interact and coalesce through these occult practices."
After that I have nothing more to say, but one thing I can't help but say is that, so that this book can become a good read for the general reader, I have done the work of translating the difficult English book into simple Bengali as much as I can. However, considerable momentum has been gained in making simple Bengali translations of various English chants. When the triveni Sangam of one mantra is combined with different language and meaning, then there is no mistake in trying to maintain the sanctity of that Sangam properly. However, it is not uncommon for errors to occur. We hope that only the kind reader will consider such faults with sympathy.
